Kokkari Estiatorio came up in 1998 at 200 Jackson Street, San Francisco, California. The founding partners George and Judy Marcus and Dr.Kenneth and Angie Frangadakis initiated this Greek destination in the heart of California to bring in fresh flavors and a unique dining experience to America.

Previously, the founders have collaborated on the sister companies of Kokkari Estiatorio like Eviva Estiatorio in Palo Alto, California.

The San Francisco landmark is named after a small fishing village located on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea, whose name is extracted from small onions that were once produced in the nearby fields.

The fertility and Mediterranean climate of the village became the primary reason for the abundance of seafood and fresh produce in the area.

As per some legends, Kokkari is the destination where a mighty hunter named Orion and a young man of gigantic stature fell in love with the daughter of King Chios.

Orion was known to be the son of the Greek god Poseidon. It is known that for the love of the princess, Orion foraged the island for wild game and seafood and prepared elaborate banquets a cuisine fit for Gods.
