Nation’s was founded by Russ Harvey at San Pablo Dam Rd. in 1952. It was a small fast food stall with six stools to sit on.

He made each burger with a special grind of beef patty, made especially as per his instructions. He also cut each ingredient after the order was placed.

Also, he used ingredients like thick-cut onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. Along with the patty it was fried hot and doubled in between two burger breads.

He named it Harvey’s and went on with the plan until the business grew substantially. Within the next decade or so, he transformed his stand into a restaurant.

Then they named it Harvey’s Giant Hamburgers. Each burger was made thick, not just to advertise but to give 100% back in the form of a warm meal. In fact, his price tags were a bit high, but what people got in return was totally worth it.

Dale Power was hired as the janitor in 1961. He was a local teenager who later became an entrepreneur by purchasing his first restaurant in Oakland.

Surprisingly, Dale returned to Russ and allowed him to expand his business through his name.

Russ immediately said yes, and with a new name, “Nation’s,” two visionaries went on to make a history of their own.

This happened around the 1970s, and Russ eventually changed the name of his original restaurant to Nation’s, just like the new one.

They believed that their Hamburgers were the best in the nation, and that’s how this came to be. Giant Hamburger came from the original name.

Dale still operates the chain as its CEO, while Russ has retired. The chain has now grown to 29 locations, and we think a few more will be opening this year.

Nation’s Giant Hamburgers Review

There should be no doubts about the Nation’s Giant Hamburgers menu or prices. Most dishes are pretty straightforward.

Like their classic Hamburger. This was our first pick, along with Gigante Burrito. These dishes have stayed the same since the beginning.

I’ll personally say it’s good. Thick slices can turn out to be a bit harder to bite through for this new generation.

But for old folks like us, it’s a piece of cake. Each bite is filled with generous portions of the patty, onion, tomato, and lettuce.

But this second dish, on the other hand, was something else. The 12-inch tortilla was loaded with three eggs along with your choice of protein.

We went for chicken; we just had beef, so it would be awkward to eat it again. It also had American cheese and crispy golden hash browns.

As for other ingredients, we went with the recommended: onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, and pickles.

“Wow! What a bite!” This was the actual reaction on my face. This burrito was rock and loaded with blasting flavors.

Egg plus chicken was a perfect pair—more perfect than the burger dish. It was salty and creamy, thanks to American cheese, and quite chewy, thanks to the egg and flour.

This dish turned out to be the best so far. After eating two salty dishes, it’s time for something sweet.

First, we ordered a thick, hand-spun chocolate shake. They call it Thick Shake for some reason; maybe it’s thick?

Finally, each person had a slice of cheesecake with strawberry topping and banana crème pie.

Strawberry One was a new addition to their ranks. It was a bit too sweet for my taste, but it was good. But that slice of banana pie was by far the best treat of this trip.
