Saint Louis Bread Company was the parent company that played a big role in the birth of Panera Bread.

Ken and Linda Rosenthal made this bread company in Kirkwood, Missouri. This happened in 1987, when he invested $150,000.

Later, they got it back as a business loan from the United States Small Business Administration, or SBA for short.

The bread was made using a sourdough starter from San Francisco. The original brand still uses it to this day.

By 1993, Saint Louis Bread Company had expanded to about 20 locations, which was a major hotspot for the city.

It got the attention of a public company called Au Bon Pain Co., which officially acquired the chain the following year by investing $23 million.

Four years later, the management decided to change the name of this bread company to Panera. This name came from a Latin word called “pānārium” or “pānāria.”

It meant “breadbasket” or “rice bowl.” It symbolizes an area that suddenly became rich in wheat, or, as we can say, bread.

Anyway, the intention was clear as day: give it a more natural or original name that will be remembered throughout the next generation.

Chipotle aioli is also a thing to coincide with—a way better addition than a simple ranch. And its sour flavor will give you the flavor boost that everyone needs.

Well, those two sandwiches got us good, and now we have almost no space for anything else. So it’s time to gull some liquid.
