Wahoo’s was founded in 1988 by three brothers, Eduardo “Ed” Lee, Renato “Mingo ” Lee, and Wing Lam.

You can guess how those Asian dishes were made into their menu at this point. They had their origins linked to China, a country filled with different kinds of cousins unique to them.

But here in America, Italian and Mexican foods dominate the food chain. That’s when they had the idea to let Americans feel what true Asian foods taste like.

Their parents fled to Brazil in 1950 following the Chinese Civil War and that exposed them to a Brazilian culture filled with fast foods like tacos.

Their family arrived in the USA around 1975. Later that year, their family opened a restaurant called Shanghai Pine Garden.

It was their family’s main income source, and with that, all five sons (yes, he has two more brothers) completed their education.

Apart from two sons, the other three had an interest in continuing the legacy of their parents’ restaurants. But by the 1980s, it was pretty clear that authentic Asian restaurants had no future.

Tex-Mex was again on the rise, neck-to-neck with Italian cuisines. Those three brothers took advantage of that and sold their pine garden.

It gave them $300k, which was invested in finding the Wahoo’s Fish Taco restaurants we all know today.

The signature menu at the time was Baja California-style fish tacos. It was unique to the home that used fish as the main ingredient.

In fact, it was so unique that people came from all over the country to try it out. Soon they started transporting food trucks, which was a big hit and just added more to their overall growth.

Some may be a bit expensive or even cheaper, depending on where you are buying them. But the average price should be 70–80% similar.

Anyway, the initial menu items were filled with drinks. Usually, it’s located at the bottom; however, it has regular colas, wine, and beer options.

Next on the list was a section called First Wave. We think it was a list of appetizers since these dishes did not look that heavy.

So we went with Chicken Taquitos, which had corn tortillas, chicken, sour cream, guacamole, and pico. It had the classic Asian flavors with its sourness.

Alternatively, you can also opt to not have any of that. For example, guacamole paste, sour cream, and pico can be opted out. Leaving you with pure corn tortillas with chicken inside.

It was a mini-cream roll with chicken instead of cream. It was bite-sized, so it did not take too long to finish these five rolls.

Next on the list was Wong’s Face. Here, fave probably means favorite. Well, we don’t know for sure, but it looked like most of the items were well-rated.

We went with the Hawaiian Onion Ring Burrito. This one also had an Asian flavor to it. Especially the meat called teriyaki steak.

Other ingredients go like this: Maui onion rings, cheese, rice, sour cream, and Maria’s salsa. This is a heavy meal, so be sure to eat your favorite tacos beforehand.

Otherwise, there will be no space for anything else. We had no idea, so we ordered a plate of crispy fish tacos ASAP.

It had an Alaskan flounder lightly breaded, melted cheese, citrus slaw, and green sauce.
