Meadows Frozen Custard History

Meadows Frozen Custard Inside usamenuprices

This franchise was founded by Meadow Brothers, J. Vernon, and Delbert on July 4, 1950. They chose a quiet place in Duncansville, Pennsylvania.

The original recipe was developed with the help of Rush A. Turner, their former Mix Master and the Head of the Ice Cream Department in Altoona.

He took over the productivity on his dairy farm, called Sealtest. It went out of business, and then Galliker’s Dairy took over the production.

They did quite a few public tests of their products before going for the big league. That resulted in attracting unwanted attention, which people just adored.

On its first day, Lines reached as many as 50 people at once, making it an instant success. So how did people know about all this? Well, all thanks to freebies, obviously.

Around the ’60s, the Meadows Brothers decided to do something different, and they eventually landed on indoor sports like go-cart, mini-golf, and batting cages.

Now it’s considered an iconic place in Pennsylvania, and people see it as a landmark. The original location is still owned by the Meadows family.

Dick, Jay, and Joel Meadows are the current owners of this location. In 2003, those three sold off the remaining locations to Gardner Meadows Inc., which later franchised 12 more locations.

More than nine were in construction before COVID-19, but now most of them are completed and open to the general public.

In 2008, an American TV show called “Taste of America” featured The Meadows Frozen Custard’s main location in Duncansville.

It included a special interview with the Meadows family, insights on the production, and feedback from the customers.

In 2016, an international location was opened in Franklin, or Canberra, Australia. Apart from that, the USA has over 25 locations, most of which are located around the Mid-Atlantic.

Meadows Frozen Custard Review

This is a pretty straightforward chain, so there should be no serious doubts about the Meadows Frozen Custard menu or prices.

As always, we went into one of their retail shops in Atlanta to check out each cold ice dessert they had.

The first one was obviously Meadows Original Frozen Custard. We heard that it has remained unchanged since the 1950s; let’s see how true that is.

Our chocolate-flavored batch was made on the counter instead of in the kitchen. So the caviar of that is that we can see the making process without any charges.

Well, the main ingredient came prepared from their dairy farm, so that’s a bummer. But apart from that, the filling, chocolate dips, and portions could be measured right from the counter.

And yeah, big portions, that’s for sure; you’ll get what you paid for. The flavor options change daily, but the chocolate one will be available throughout the year.

Overall, the custard was definitely the star of the show. The chocolate-coated one tasted the best, and we were lucky enough to pick that over others.

Will go well with some baked goodies, so we ordered another batch of strawberry shortcakes. Yet another well-made treat that needs no introduction.

The shortcake was made with simple ingredients: a small slice of cake at the bottom, whipped cream, and a cherry on top—a classic presentation indeed.

There was also a massive dessert called custard pie, an elegant masterpiece of sweet classiness and custard. It was a bit too large for us, so we skipped that. That looked quite appetizing, that’s for sure.

We’ll probably opt for that on our next visit. Lastly, we each had a cup of swirls. It came in many flavors; go for Butterfinger; that’s the underrated one.

Final Thoughts

The Meadows Frozen Custard menu is larger than you think, and the best part about it is that there are hidden menus in different locations.

Some serve special-edition custard flavors like mango or, probably the most underrated, pineapple.

Well, that’s your luck; we couldn’t see it on our visits, but maybe the next one will be different! Meadows plans to expand more over the next 10 years.

With the election coming up, we don’t think Meadows Frozen Custard will try anything big. Anyhow, they managed to offer us a great time, and we are thankful for that.
