Vic’s Ice Cream History

It was founded by Ashley Rutledge and Vic Zito in 1947. They were war buddies, serving during WW2 in the US Coast Guard division.

After the war ended, they both decided to start a business and live a peaceful life. And that thought gave birth to Vic’s Ice Cream.

They both decided on a nearby location at 3199 Riverside Blvd. It was right next to Sacramento’s Land Park, which soon became a hotspot thanks to them.

Both pairs had different visions about what their store would sell. Sometimes they agreed on a sports bar that sold everything from dinner to liquor.

Sometimes they land on casual dining and even every growing Tex Mex. But the ultimate choice fell upon an ice cream shop.

They had exclusive access to post-war sugar rations thanks to their service. Two people meant double the rations, which greatly contributed to their final judgment.

As for the name, Vic was the perfect candidate. It was short and required less effort to remember.

Ashley is a bit difficult to remember, and Vic’s has that authentic aroma to it. After everything was done, on February 2nd, 1947, the shop opened its doors for the first time.

They used an old Emery Thompson machine to make each batch. It took around 30–40 minutes at most. 22 flavors were introduced at first, and as always, chocolate was by far the best.

Vic passed away in the 1960s, while Ashley died in 2010. The store’s rights were passed down to Ashley’s son before all this happened.

Over the years, Vic’s remained unchanged, except for the recent expansion plan that remodeled the restrooms and made them easily accessible.

There should be no confusion about Vic’s Ice Cream menu or prices. Their menu isn’t massive like any fast food chain.

They have a good amount of other items too, like sandwiches, soda, and so on. But we will definitely include their scoops in between.

Anyway, our first order was a sandwich with egg salad. There’s nothing extraordinary about it; it’s just a well-made sandwich, and it definitely tastes way better than it sounds.

Everything came fresh out of the kitchen, no cold or reheated. And sandwiches always taste great with these kinds of treatments.

There was a seasonal menu with four items on the list. The cappuccino chip sounded quite appetizing, so we went with that.

Remember that this menu will change based on the season, but some items can still be served.

The chips were quite sweet, with a rather unusual flavor. Well, salty ones go well with sandwiches, but this cappuccino flavor hit the spot.

We ordered a small bowl of side salad. It had the usual tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and stuff. It always goes well with sandwiches, and as for me, it was an additional topping.

Next up was a cold Sherbet Freeze. It sounds similar to an Indian drink called Sharbat. Anyway, it’s made with fruit pulp, so it’s kind of similar to most juices.

The only difference is that it’s quite thick, which makes it sound like a shake. Anyway, my personal favorite was the strawberry one.

And at last, the time came for the French vanilla ice cream. Generous portions, as the rumors said, and the vanilla fragrance were as strong as they could get.

And the best part was the smile that we received as a bonus. It’s a special ingredient, making it much sweeter than it was before.

Final Thoughts

We can confirm that their service is more fitting for their name. Now we can somewhat understand why it’s so closely related to Sacramento’s history.

The decor, dress code, and warm welcome proved all that. We usually don’t see this level of hospitality in larger areas.

And it truly feels good to be welcomed in such a way that it makes even the most ordinary food taste ten times better.
