A Chinese immigrant named Charlie Zhang was the mastermind behind this idea. He came to the USA with only $20 in 1982 and a few Asian recipes.

He then adapted those same dishes to the American style by reducing the portion and oil used. And included vinegar, soy sauce, etc. for cooking.

With these revised recipes and seven years of savings, he opened his first restaurant in Rancho Santa Margarita, California.

So was it an instant hit? Well, in the next three years, he managed to open six more flagship locations, so we think yes.

Not a massive hit like KFC or any other fast food chain. But when we consider an entirely different culture of food, yeah, it was definitely a success.

Another few years passed, and the chain ended up invading San Diego, especially in Del Mar and Carlsbad.

By 2001, Pick Up Stix was big enough to attract buyers, and eventually, a good offer arrived from Carlson. (formerly known as Carlson Companies)

Carlson Restaurants Worldwide was the new parent company, and that gave a massive boost in both morale and funds.

Charlie remained the CEO of Pick Up Stix until 2003 when he decided to retire. There were about 50 active locations by this point.

In 2010, Carlson was acquired by Mandarin Holdings, owned by Lorne Goldberg. Linda Nelson took over the position of Chief Operation Officer later that year.

Another big thing happened in that same era: all locations in Nevada and Arizona were closed down.

Two years later, the Excalibur Hotel and Casino underwent a big renovation. A lot of restaurant owners had names on the list of new employees.

Manchu Wok was one of them, but for some reason, it was removed and replaced by Pick Up Stix. Was it a coincidence?

Well, most of you guys have a lot of questions about the Pick Up Stix menu or prices. Dishes like Wonton or Edamame will make anyone’s head spin.

But are they any good? Our first contender was a new dish called Hot Honey Chicken.

Yup, you guessed it!! It’s honey and chicken in one bowl. More like a mixture of honey and garlic on top of crispy chicken.

It comes with spicy habanero chili and green onions as toppings. It is a spicy one, so make sure that your appetite can endure the burn.

But yeah, the chicken was something else. Honey made it a bit sweet, but not so much, thanks to garlic and toppings like onion.

It’s hot through and through, and you can get either steamed vegetables or chow mein. Steamed rice works too, which is probably the best one of all.

Well, rice was my choice for today. The sweet and spicy flavors, along with the rice slightly soaked in chicken stock, just taste otherworldly.

It’s nothing like the regular fast foods that I mostly digest. It blasts all flavors into your mouth, and yeah, it’s pretty overwhelming.

Eat it hot, because our taste buds go nuts when hot spices mingle with our tongue. Well, enough of that; now it’s time for Wonton Soup.

That’s the weird one, but how does it taste? It’s a Chinese soup made with white chicken, wontons, shrimp, broccoli, carrots, and mushrooms.

These white chickens are soaked well in the sauce that comes with them. The same goes for all other ingredients, and in short, all of them have a similar flavor thanks to this.

The chicken will serve as the main highlight of this dish, while other vegetables will act as a distraction from the overwhelming flavors the soup has.
