Swenson’s Drive-In History
Wesley T. “Pop” Swenson was the founding father of this massive chain. He originally served hamburgers in a station wagon at Buchtel High School.
That happened in 1933, and every single high schooler loved his burgers. It was clean, cost less for students, and, above all, all ingredients were of high quality.
After receiving countless heartwarming compliments, Wesley decided to take his chance and open a drive-thru restaurant of his own.
In 1934, he chose South Hawkins Avenue in Hakron as his base of operation. By the 1940s, it started gathering a massive number of crowds.
When a car has its headlights on, that means it is ready to order. And according to past reports, there were tons of them.
So in 1949, Swenson decided to sell his restaurant to a better person who knew how to manage and expand it.
Swenson was a simple man, and he gained his fair share of profit in his 16 years of service. It was for the best, and the new owner, Robert Phillips, turned out to be a great guy.
He immediately started expanding and opened the second location on East Cuyahoga Falls Avenue in 1952.
The logo was designed twice, first in the 1950s, which stayed on for the ride until a modern and more stylized one was designed in the 1980s.
This new one became the icon of this brand. However a redevelopment plan was initiated in the late 1990s, and everything remained the same.
This redeveloped one seems to be going fine for the time being. It won’t be changing anytime soon.
Swenson’s released its first food truck in 2013, followed by a second one in 2018. Both ran around the town, serving the same goodies to everyone around them.

We went to Akron City for the best possible flavors, right from the hometown of the founding father.
The first order of business was vegetable beef soup. It’s a time-limited item, so there’s no way we’ll miss that.
Each cup had Eight delicious vegetables jam-packed with tasty beef in a rich broth. Doesn’t that just sound lovely?
The smell..!!! Wow, it was something else. So strong and yet so calming. Come in a regular or large cup, so get your pick!
Despite the title, it tasted more like a meat curry. The only difference is that meat curry has a thicker broth.
Meanwhile, this soup had more liquid to it, separating both dishes by a slight margin. Anyway, if you have never tasted beef curry, then this is your chance.
It’s salty, and the vegetables blend quite well. Turning the broth into a house full of flavors that just won’t go away until you eat them all!
Next up was the classic Double Hamburg. The signature dish came with signature varieties, as expected. Get the normal one if it’s the first time for you.
This bad boy had two massive beef patties, along with pickles, mustard, and raw white onions. Add toppings as you go, like lettuce, Swenson Tartar Sauce, etc.
Get the recommendation; it always tastes best. And sweet pickles may taste better than dull ones; it all depends on preference.
Anyway, you’ll need a big mouth to cut through the first bite! Believe us, it is bigger than you think.
And when that double patty enters your mouth with a chock full of American cheese and other ingredients, it feels awesome!!
