Taco Casa History

Taco Casa has been an iconic place ever since it opened in Tuscaloosa in 1974. But Roy Upshaw and his family started this whole plan two years prior in Texas.

Taco Casa remained an underdog for quite a while, until the end of the 20th century, when its popularity really bloomed.

The old, nostalgic vibe attracted a lot of customers, not because Taco Casa was a giant in the market but because it provided something that others didn’t.

For starters, their signature dish is called Sancho. It’s like a soft taco filled with beef and other ingredients.

Some may remember an Asian dish called curry bun, or meat bun; it’s comparable to that. But the only difference is that it has two sides open, like a burrito.

Anyway, the Taco Casa menu has other items too, mostly unchanged since day one. But thanks to that, prices remained cheap.

Simple ingredients don’t cost a fortune, and the simpler the process, the easier it is to handle. That’s how Taco Casa has managed to grow from a single store to 100 in the past 50 years.

Do you remember the 2011 Super Outbreak? Yes, it’s still one of the largest and deadliest tornadoes ever recorded in human history.

And unfortunately, it happened right in the territory of Taco Casa. Alabama suffered a lot but also gained quite a few things in the process.

One of them was the courage to rebuild and not lose hope even after devastation as big as this.

Taco Casa was the first business to start the rebuilding process, showing the world that even the most fearsome natural calamities can’t break their spirit.

Taco Casa Review

You must have many questions about the Taco Casa menu or prices! After all, quite a few dishes have a unique name.

Our team went to Alabama to test everything out. Sanchos were limited to this side of the franchise, so we just had to try it out.

There were two protein options: beef and chicken. I personally went for chicken, since I’ve been eating beef since last week!

The base was a large soft flour tortilla, and it was filled with chicken, shredded lettuce, grated Wisconsin, and their spicy sauce.

The sauce also had three types: mild, hot, or extra-hot. Pick your poison wisely, because it’s hotter than you think!

And man, oh man, the chicken was so good!!!! Perfectly cooked with simple ingredients—nothing too fancy—the end result was better than a KFC wrap. (Or maybe not.)

You can pretty much mark this as the best this restaurant has to offer. We had a few soft tacos and burritos right after this, and they were okay.

They pretty much have the same ingredients, the same sauce, and the same toppings. Still, something was lacking. Maybe the lack of ingredients was catching up. Who knows.

Anyway, next up on the list was a beef taco burger. The bun was soft-steamed with grated cheddar cheese.

The rest of the ingredients were the same as in the first dish, again. But since this is a burger, the lack of ingredients won’t hurt as much as our second and third meals.

The beef patty was quite thick too—a generous portion indeed—and it paired well with mild sauce.

We ended our journey with a good, cold, sweet tea with a lemon on top. We hopped for some desserts, but that was a stretch at this point.

Final Thoughts

So how was our experience? Well, I’ll say it was good. Most fast food restaurants have 2-3 good dishes that many people love.

Taco Casa has about three of them, which is a good number. Yeah, their menu is filled with other dishes too, but come on, who can eat more than two or three dishes at a time?

Apart from the fact that a lack of ingredients may become a big nuisance, each dish is cheaper than the competition, but how big does that sacrifice make?

We leave that up to you to decide. In the end, we definitely had a good time; that much is certain.
