Cafe Du Monde History
The original Café Du Monde restaurant opened in 1862 in the New Orleans French Market. The first Café Du Monde was a traditional coffee shop that hosted the neighbors all year round.
The Café Du Monde coffee stand is owned by the renowned Fernandez family who have held it since its birth. In 1942 Hubert Fernandez bought the coffee stand from Fred Koeniger and his family still runs the café.
During those days, Mr. Fernandez also owned a Wine Seller located on the ground floor of the Pontalba Apartment across from the Café Du Monde restaurant.
However, later in 1972, the Fernandez wine cellar was shut down and the family primarily concentrated on developing Café Du Monde.
‘Café Du Monde’, the name is French for Café of the World or the People’s café, rightly portrays the culture of the junction. Over the years, Café Du Monde expanded its service at shopping malls and finally has 9 subsidiaries.
In the New Orleans metropolitan area, the Café Du Monde has branched out to RiverWalk Marketplace, Esplanade Mall, Lakeside Mall, Oakwood Mall, Veterans Boulevard, Mandeville, Covington, City Park, New Orleans, and Louis Armstrong International Airport while keeping intact at the original French Market 800 Decatur Street.
In 1984, Café Du Monde made its franchisee to Japan under an agreement with the Duskin Company.

After serving the Japanese for decades, the Duskin Company finally ended its ties with Café Du Monde in 2018, thus closing down all the subsidiaries.
