The first retail bakery opened up in 1955 at 167 West 74th Street, Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City.

The founders Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald initially served freshly baked artisanal bread and thus stood with the name Levain, which is French for natural leavening agent made of flour, water, and white yeast and is best referred to as a sourdough starter.

Even today, six long decades after its launch, the bakery is rooted in its origin, despite all the transformation that it has borne over the years.

Pam and Connie had a huge passion for cooking, baking, friendship, and hard work. To channel their mutual love for baking, they opened a small bakery shop in 1955 and started selling artisanal bread.

Eventually, they launched ultimate chocolate chip cookies and in no time, the cookies became customers’ must-order.

The cookies at West 74th Street became a neighborhood junction that was decked up with natives and tourists.

Over the years, the founders developed the flagship cookie while prepping up for the Ironman trilithon.

During the trilithon, they found that the participants needed a traditional chocolate chip cookie that is bigger and serves larger calories for the rigorous practice.

The 6-ounce chocolate chip cookies of Levain Bakery served the purpose and in no time brought the owners massive success.

The second subsidiary of Levain opened in 2000 at Hampton, Long Island. The third branch was inaugurated in the Harlem neighborhood of Manhattan and in 2017 the fourth Levain bakery location was opened near the Upper West Side.

Since then three more locations popped up in the Upper West Side, NoHo, and Williamsburg. The latest location came up in 2020 which is the first one beyond New York at Georgetown, Washington DC.

Levain Bakery has been on the run since 1955 and in the past decade, the Levain Bakery menu and prices have evolved with changing times.

With the passing years, the bakery has implemented other marketing processes like launching gift cards, mail orders, no-bake goodies, and more.
