Shoney’s History

It all started in 1947 when a man named Alex Schoenbaum opened a drive-in restaurant in Charleston, West Virginia.

The remnants of World War II were bad; the economy had fallen when the war was on. But now it’s slowly rising for the better.

Many people started their businesses for the first time in the mid-19th century, and Shoney’s was one of them.

After 5 years of operation, it was renamed Big Boy Restaurant, only to end up at what we currently know as Shoney’s.

The official name began circulating around 1955; a revolution was upon us, and a legend left his home to conquer other regions.

The Big Boy still had a lot of stores around West Virginia. Some original Big Boy restaurants are still kicking around to this day.

After a few years, a small businessman called Ray Danner got the air of the new rising star called Frisch’s Big Boy.

He liked the concept and then started looking for a way to bring one to his hometown, Louisville, Kentucky.

He contacted Alex and soon bought the Shoney’s Nashville franchise for $1000. The all-new Shoney’s Big Boy opened its door in Madison for the first time.

By 1966, Shoney’s had 10 stores in Kentucky. That same year, Danner bought the Louisville KFC franchise and started operating it along with Shoney’s.

In 1969, Danner went public with his two big investments and eventually merged both under a single name, Danner Foods, Inc.

There are a lot of success stories like this one. Each major location had an interesting past, which again gave Shoney’s a big boost in popularity and reach.

In 2007, Lone Star was the current owner, and Shoney’s was sold off to Atlanta-based Royal Capital Corporation. David Davoudpour was the acting CEO at the time.

All queries about Shoney’s menu and prices should be cleared by now. Remember that prices and menus will differ based on locations.

We had two choices: Shoney’s freshly prepared Legendary Breakfast Bar or the usual restaurants. The options were tough, but we ultimately went for restaurants.

That will give us more time to think about what to order. Enough chit-chat; our first target on the list was Create-Your-Own Omelet.

By far, this one had the most delicious varieties. We had three egg omelets along with cheddar cheese, bacon, and onions.

There are a total of 11 toppings, and you can pick three of them. Anyways, the omelet had Shoney’s original seasoning, and man, oh man, it was out of this world!

Most omelets have a pretty predictable taste, but this one was made by a master chef. It was chewy, and the cheese was creamy as hell!

Bacon was as ordinary as it can get, and the saltiness and crunchiness of onion gave it an acceptable range of flavor.

Next up was country-fried steak. It’s a traditional dish, and not everyone can masterfully craft its flavor and texture.

But Shoney’s managed to nail it too. The tender steak was breaded in their signature seasoned flour and later smothered in their original white gravy.

Wow! Just WOW! The flavor, the creaminess, the tender steak—everything was just perfect. No words can describe how good it was.

We almost had our fills at this point, except for dessert. Everyone has a special room for dessert, as they say.

Strawberry pie was our preferred choice. It was baked with plump, fresh strawberries and mixed with a special glaze.

This is a new addition to Shoney’s menu, and it’s definitely one of the best so far. It’s sweet but not overwhelming.

Finally Thoughts

Shoney’s menu has a lot of traditional dishes made in an untraditional way. It tastes good, has a modern touch to it, and doesn’t cost a fortune either.

As of today, they have over 60 locations. Most of them were closed right after COVID-19, and that’s pretty much expected.

Most businesses suffered, and many closed their doors permanently. Shoney’s survived, and now it’s back with new dishes and fresh air.

The new dessert lineup soaks up most of their popularity. But we can say this for sure: their Omelet and Breakfast Lineups are the best.

That’s what Shoney’s is known for, after all: serving traditional dishes without compromising quality or quantity.
