The first store Breadsmith opened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1993. The founder Dan Sterling fell in love with homemade European bread while studying in Norway.

After graduating from Havard Business School he joined a bakery store and did accounting. After being associated with the bakery industry, Dan Sterling thought of launching his own brand of bakery. That’s when he conceived Breadsmith.

Since its inception, Breadsmith has expanded through franchises. In 1994, Dan Sterling sold the first franchised store and thus began the development of Breadsmith as a franchise operation.

Over the years, Breadsmith has been established at 35 locations across 14 American states, most of which have sprouted in the Middle West.

Currently, Tim Malouf is the president of the company and has initiated his career at Breadsmith’s first store. The Breadsmith headquarters is situated at Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.
