Whataburger History

Whataburger started their journey right in the middle of the 20th century. Yup, it was 1950, and there were two bright minds behind it.

Harmon Dobson and Paul Burton were looking for a burger stand to open. But Mr. Dobson had a bright idea.

What if we made a burger so big that it wouldn’t fit in one hand? So people will use two. Also, what if the fillings were so good and juicy that the next thing that comes after the first bite would be “What a Burger!!!”

That was the real intention, and that’s how it got its signature name. Whataburger menu had the biggest burger of the era. Thanks to that, it also served almost double the current competition.

In that same year, the trademark passed, and in August, the first store opened on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas. The starting price of their burger was 25 cents, along with chips and beverages.

Soon, this turned out to be expensive, and Dobson demanded that the price be increased. Burton did not like that, so he ended the partnership with Dobson in 1951.

Since then, Dobson became pretty much the only founding father behind most of the decisions, and his part of the franchise became the modern Whataburger that we know today.

He also invented the original orange and white-striped A-frame store. The reason behind it was his passion for flying.

But that same passion became his demise. In 1962, the founding father died in a plane crash. This was a big shock to Whataburger.

Despite being young and inexperienced, the next generation of the Dobson family took over. Whataburger had 17 active restaurants by then.

Under the leadership of Grace Dubson, the franchise saw the start of its growth streak and completed a milestone of 200 active restaurants in 1971. This streak is still going on to this day.

Whataburger Review

Since everything started with the big, juicy burger, let us begin our review with that one. Whataburger menu has a lot of burger options.

But we will recommend going with Whataburger®. This has three serving options. The first one is just a burger, and you can choose the side dish later. The second one comes with a fixed side dish option, while the third one is a low-calorie version.

We went with the second one, which is the most popular of all. The ordering option is rather feature-rich. We could pick up our bun and even ask for toasting on both sides.

The beef patty was 5 inches thick, so we went with the recommended 5-inch bun. That’s the signature dish, after all. It had a layer of American cheese and Monterey Jack cheese.

There were four kinds of add-on toppings. We went for jalapeno, and as for the main topping, we went with tomato, lettuce, diced onions, and pickles.

We went for Creamy Pepper’s signature sauce, which concluded this massive burger. The actual calories were somewhat between 1300 and 1500.

Well, we could eat a single bite more after consuming all that. So we went with Dr Pepper® Shake. It went right in and had two options: shake and melt. Go for the shake option if you don’t know which one to pick.

Final Thoughts

Well, the Whataburger menu has everything that a burger lover wants. Even a kids’ version of Whataburger exists.

It’s called Justaburger. It also needs two tiny hands to hold, so don’t get comfy! We also didn’t know that there were even breakfast menu options.

But they go on sale for a limited time, which is from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. Wait, did I say PM? Oh yeah, we forgot to mention that all Whataburger stores are open 24/7 and 365 days a year!

We aren’t joking; that’s how Whataburger has expanded so much in the past 70 or so years. Now they have over 900 active locations.

The founding family left the franchise as it was well independent by 2019. Now it’s corporate, and nothing is stopping them.

The signature dishes were made with 50 years of leadership under the Dobson family, and now they hold so much that even the menu can’t carry them! So, what are you waiting for?
