Old Southern BBQ History

Old Southern BBQ was founded by David W. “Famous Dave” Anderson in April of 2015. Its full name is Jimmie’s Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse.

His Famous Dave’s still remains his main goal. Meanwhile, Old Southern BBQ sets its aim at the fast-casual BBQ genre.

They smoke all of their meat daily while also making sure that everything in between is either handcrafted or bought from a trusted supplier.

It’s been around 8 years only, and Jammie managed to get the attention of six major investors for now. It’s down by two restaurants already, which directly indicates something happened.

The usual diagram was to open one location each year, but as always, COVID-19 turned everything upside down.

A few restaurants were closed and then reopened when the time came. In short, it’s not that Old Southern BBQ failed to promise its expansion.

Instead, they did all they could and managed to survive the landfall. We can again thank Famous Dave’s Steakhouse for that; a lot of the loss was compensated by the main chain.

As of today, Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse has four fully operational restaurants across Minnesota and Wisconsin.

While all this was happening, Dave Anderson, the founder, suddenly passed away on February 12, 2023. Remember that this information may be inaccurate since there aren’t any solid sources that we can trust.

But, certainly, he passed away last year. With that came a stalemate for Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse, which is now being managed by his son.

So what will happen next? Will his son keep managing it or permanently close it? Well, we don’t know for sure.

Most likely, it’ll be sold to some other company. That’s the most viable choice, rather than closing it down permanently. It won’t go through bankruptcy, that’s for sure.

Old Southern BBQ Review

All doubts regarding the Old Southern BBQ menu and prices should be cleared at this point. Expect a lot of BBQ-styled dishes from this one.

Our first encounter was with BBQ tacos. This smokey delicacy was made with two flour tortillas filled with BBQ rice.

You can also get your choice of one meat, three fresh toppings, and a drizzle of their BBQ sour cream. Well, recommend going for pork since that’s the most liked one.

The meat, on the other hand, was hand-cut right when the order was placed. So when it was pipping hot, it arrived at our booth.

The BBQ rice was a good edition; it’s a bit heavy on the stomach, so you can skip that. Otherwise, it gives tacos a mild flavor that they usually lack.

As for toppings, we had pickled red onions, lettuce, and tomatoes. Pickled onion is a must-have in this case. It was sour and had the classic, strong fragrance of the red onion.

Remember that red onions produce more acid than white or green ones? That gives it a naturally stronger flavor than any other.

Now we had two choices: smoked meat or smoked meat inside a sandwich. We eventually landed in Sandwich after an intense discussion.

Memphis Mayhem was the go-to pick. This bad way was made with smoked brisket and pulled pork in their Memphis sauce.

It was then topped with a slice of Texas Hot Link, onions, party corn, cheddar cheese, and BBQ sour cream.

The bun was toasted with good-quality butter. My preferred side was salad. Get Mac & Cheese or something else if you aren’t a fan of veggies.

The pulled pork was a worthy contender. It was smokey as expected and tasted quite similar to a BBQ taco.

Final Thoughts

The future doesn’t look that good for Old Southern BBQ Smokehouse. The concept is great, but the lack of motivation can be seen clearly.

Food is great anyway; that’s the most redeeming point so far. Their smoked meat is authentic and has a classic texture.

Maybe add the Burned End as a separate menu. We know how good it tastes, and Old Southern BBQ can definitely nail it.

We’d also like to see some more salad dishes on the Old Southern BBQ menu. The same goes for beverages and desserts.

These three things are integral parts of a good or great restaurant. It’s human nature to crave something sweet at the end of a meal.
