Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse History

Everything began in 1965, when a middle-aged divorced woman named Ruth Fertel, with two children, took the boldest decision of her life.

Yes, she bought a steakhouse. Remember that it was the nuclear family era, so women had fewer rights than now. You needed the signature of your husband for a small task such as opening a bank account.

That’s why we made the boldest decision. But the history behind her purchase was a bad one. Chris Matulich was the previous owner of this plot.

Chris Steak House ran for 38 years under Chris and had the worst luck of all. It was sold dozens of times by his management, and somehow he also bought it back.

It was cheaper each time, with less furniture and things, until Ruth bought it in 1965. That’s when a new era began.

Ruth bought it against the wishes of her lawyers, bankers, relatives, and everyone else. She was a single mother, so she had no choice but to remarry or do hard labor.

She said no to both and decided to start a business. That way, if she played her cards right, then both kids could end up in a better college.

She mortgaged her family home for that, and later on, she purchased the Chris Steak House with that money. She also used her brother’s restaurant.

The name of that restaurant was Sig’s Antique Restaurant in Port Sulphur, Louisiana. She then used her family recipes to make the very first batch of steaks.

She sold 35 steaks for $5 each on her first day. Which also ended up going towards the renovation of the Chris Steak House. This renovation cost $4000 more.

She bought the Chris Steak House for $18,000. She learned all the management and business techniques from here on out.

The original Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse menu started with a steak, but now it’s filled with many international items, including new originals.

Now we are bringing you the top 3 must-try items from Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse menu that define the entire history behind this restaurant chain.

Ruth’s Chop Salad, for example, is an original salad recipe invented by none other than Ruth herself. It’s filled with homegrown veggies seasoned with perfect spices.

It includes julienne iceberg lettuce, baby spinach, and radicchio paired with red onions, green olives, and mushrooms.

That’s not all; it further includes bacon, eggs, croutons, hearts of palm, and bleu cheese, which is dressed in a lemon basil dressing. In the end, everything is topped with crispy onions.

Porterhouse for Two is another original recipe developed in Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse.

This recipe has 40 ounces of prime beef with the rich flavor of a strip and the tenderness of a fillet. Just pure raw experience—nothing more, nothing less.

Veal Ossobuco Ravioli was a great appetizer. It’s not an original dish, but it doesn’t fail to increase your hunger even more than destroying it.

Savor saffron-infused pasta filled with veal osso buco and fresh mozzarella cheese. All that was topped with a white wine demi-glace.

Final Thoughts

Well, so how did Chris Steak House change into this new name? It seems like we forgot to mention that. Well, it turns out that there was an incident in 1976.

A big fire broke out in Chris Steak House and ended up burning most of what was in there. So Ruth decided to relocate it, but the name wasn’t allowed to accompany her.

So she added her name “Ruth” to it and renamed it Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse as we know it today. So that was the true history behind this name.

Ruth faced countless challenges in her lifetime, but her courage and charisma drove the demon away and turned this chain into an international phenomenon.

Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse has over 100 steakhouses in many countries, like Japan, the USA, Canada, Mexico, etc.

Ruth did her best, and her next generation respected that fully. Ruth opened her shares for the public market in 2005, and they are still going under the name “RUTH”.
