Darden Restaurants was the creator of Smokey Bones. Yes, it’s the same Darden Restaurants that also holds the right to serve both Olive Garden and Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

Anyway, the first restaurant was spotted around August 1999 in Orlando, Florida. The place was previously occupied by Red Lobster Hospitality, LLC.

It’s also close to the headquarters of Darden Restaurants, so it was easier to maintain and roam between these two places when needed.

It’s a business venture to target other BBQ chains famous around town. For example, Woody’s BBQ, Sonny’s BBQ, Tumbleweed Tex-Mex Grill, etc.

Well, the Smokey Bones had big dreams, and a good warm meal never fails to attract loyal customers. By 2001, Darden had opened 8 Smokey Bones in Florida, the Midwest, and the Northeast.

The expansion project was going well—a bit too well—and by the next 6 years, Smokey Bones had grown to over 125 stores in 22 Eastern States.

This rapid growth came to bite them the same year when a big loss occurred. It was then followed by permanently closing down 56 Smokey Bones within just a few months.

The remaining Smokey Bones were sold off to Barbeque Integrated Inc. for $80 million. Darden didn’t have the best vision for BBQs, but this new parent company did.

At the time, Smokey Bones had around 73 active locations, which the new parent company inherited from Darden Restaurants.

But the condition it was in was pretty miserable. It was in such bad shape that it took years to stabilize the sales results across all locations.

Some were closed down permanently, and a few had their staff replaced by new ones. Ultimately, it shrank down to 62 as of April last year.

The past wasn’t the best, but that doesn’t mean the current conditions are worse either. Smokey Bones went through a massive overhaul, and now it’s one of the best in town.

You can clearly see it in Smokey Bones menu prices, which aren’t as pricey as before. It’s acceptable for what they provide, which is the best of the best.

We started our day with an Asian dish called Korean Pork Belly Pops. The meat was shaped like the size of tofu; in short, it looked like the ice cubes that we know.

The tender pork belly was slow-cooked and flash-fried until crispy. It came with Korean BBQ sauce and was served with a freshly crumbed cucumber salad and a spicy mayo drizzle.

It came in bite sizes, which is okay since it’s an appetizer and not the main meal. Well, this Korean dish isn’t bad at all.

The pork belly was well-cooked, and the sauce was definitely the best for this kind of meat. Well, now I’m interested to see what Smokey Bones has in store for us.

The OG Bowl was our next target. OG means Original Gangster, right? In this case, it probably means original.

Anyway, this dish had Southern-fried boneless chicken in a bowl filled with mashed potatoes, gravy, crumbled bacon, roasted corn cheddar-jack cheese, and green onions.

It’s a creamy delight, and the chicken was super. The potato gravy, along with the cheese, gave it a natural salty flavor.

That saltiness further enhanced the outside layer of the chicken, giving it a unique texture like never before. And yeah, the green onions were a bit sweet, making sure that the saltiness didn’t go overboard.

We recommend removing the roasted corn. You can ask for it right away when ordering, so it’s hassle-free.
