Taco Cabana History

Taco Cabana was founded in September 1978 by Felix Stehling. It was the first restaurant of his career to open in Midtown San Antonio.

He purchased an abandoned Dairy Queen as its location since he also needed sufficient parking space for a bar across the street.

It eventually transformed into a taco stand with patio-style dining areas that we just heard of. This gave birth to their signature decor.

This decoration was the idea of his wife, Billie Jo Stehling. But unfortunately, all the patio-style furniture was stolen on the very first night.

Probably because it was half open to the outside with no protection. So it was easier for thieves to snuck it out without triggering any kind of alarm system.

So Stehling decided to open it 24/7. Soon, this 24/7 taco restaurant became a big thing in San Antonio. Slowly, Stehling and his brother started opening more taco stands around the area.

By 1986, Taco Cabana had nine active locations. In 1982, an imitation began resurfacing with the name Two Pesos.

All the signature trademarks were duplicated there, and so Taco Cabana filed a lawsuit against copyright infringement in 1987.

It ran for 5 years, and eventually, Taco Cabana won with $3.7 million as compensation for damage. In 1993, TC bought his imitator for 94,000 shares valued at around $22 million.

Taco Cabana had 17 and Two Pesos had 30 restaurants at the time. The merger allowed TC to grow overnight with 57 locations on hand.

Most of them were converted, and 5-7 got sold off. The current design was established around 2012, with lights from the ceiling and large Mexican photos on the wall.

In 2017, a restaurant tycoon called Yadav Enterprises, Inc. bought Taco Cabana for $85 million from Fiesta Restaurant Group, Inc.

Taco Cabana Review

The Taco Cabana menu and prices have been well-adjusted by the new administration. Many new menus were added, and some of them were on limited-time discounts too.

Chilaquiles with Ranchero Sauce, for example. It’s a straightforward dish; you can think of it as French fries with sauce of some kind.

Anyway, it was crunchy and salty, and the sauce was a bit sweet. This is a rather addictive dish, so beware; otherwise, you’ll end up ordering twice, just like we did.

Meanwhile, their fish tacos took us by surprise. We recently covered Taco Del Mar, which also specializes in fish tacos.

Well, it was perfect since now we can compare these two. TC had medium-rare cooked river fish with Pico de Gallo, lettuce, and lemon pepper mayo.

The fish was good, but not as good as the Coastal Baja fish. By far, Taco Del Mar’s Fish Taco was the best.

But Taco Cabana’s Fish Taco ain’t bad either. It doesn’t have a plethora of ingredients, leaving you with the fish and flour tortillas, which is the most important part.

We’ll recommend getting the Fish Taco Combo that comes with two of these, one side dish of your choice, dipping sauce, and a glass of drink.

Get Salsa de Fuego along with chips and sour cream as your other choice. The drink options didn’t have anything fancy; anyway, a glass of Coke never dies down.

A single fish taco won’t be enough for anyone but kids. Anyway, these punny dishes weren’t enough to satisfy our hunger.

So it’s time for some bacon and egg taco combos. This bad boy had an omelet and bacon inside a flour tortilla.

Plus hash browns and a drink of your choice. The egg was masterfully fried, and the same goes for the bacon.

Final Thoughts

The sheer number of options is mind-boggling. We haven’t heard of many taco dishes because it’s such an easy Mexican dish that can be filled with virtually anything.

Omlet, steak, pork, chicken—just name it, and it shall be there. We saw a lack of original sauce—something bombastic that’ll take it to the next level.

Also, the toppings were lacking in numbers. Generous portions are missing, which wasn’t the case with some of our past TexMex encounters.

Anyway, it’s still fine; the texture and flavors are good. The same goes for the presentation; it’s more of a clean outlook than hundreds of small ingredients that some of us won’t like.
