Taco Del Mar History

Taco Del Mar Inside usamenuprices

The first location was opened in Seattle on June 8th, 1992. Two brothers named James and John Schmidt were behind this idea.

Their original plan gave them a massive boost in going forward with it. While the coastal area provided them with the idea that made Taco Mar Del what it is today.

Decor as well as foods are highly inspired by Baja Beach in California. In fact, their signature dish contains baja fish.

It was an instant hit at the time, rapidly growing their business and eventually entering the franchising industry soon after.

Due to some unknown dispute or something, in 2007, two key people left Taco Del Mar. The first one was when David Huether resigned as Franchising Corp. President.

Just a month later, Neal Hollingsworth also left the business in Seattle. He was the VP of Franchising Sales.

That didn’t stop the growth streak, and by 2010, Taco Del Mar had over 250 locations in most of the states.

Now these numbers are down to 60, but there’s a solid story behind it. In 2008, a big explosion broke out in a British Columbia location.

It was an intentional action caused by an arsonist. The case went on for a while, but the ultimate judgment wasn’t enough to cover the loss Taco Del Mar suffered.

Then, in 2010, the Seattle branch filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. It was then sold off to the founders of Subway Restaurants, Fred DeLuca and Peter Buck.

Franchise Brands LLC acquired it for $3.25 million, which later got sold off to High Bluff Capital Partners on July 10, 2018.

As of April last year, Taco Del Mar has shrank down to 50 from 66 when Jimmy Acquired It. Tim Casey is the acting CEO of Taco Del Mar for now.

Taco Del Mar Review

Did you read our second part? Well, then there should be no more doubts about the Taco Del Mar menu or prices.

The list has definitely shrunk down over the years, but that doesn’t mean that any dish is bad. A smaller list gives us a clear understanding of what to choose next.

Tacos…Uno, Dos, Tres, Más? Was our go-to pick in this case. It’s one of two taco recipes that they serve right now.

It was made with crispy baked white fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, and their famous Baja sauce. You can even create your own combination of ingredients if you like.

The white meat fish was salty in nature, as expected. The coastal goodies always taste a bit different than the fish from the river.

Anyway, the tacos were crunchy, while the meat was a bit soft. The cabbage and pickle gave it both a sour and a sweet flavor.

And their baja sauce made everything quite tangy. In short, it was perfect. It reminded us of Wahoo’s Fish Taco in a way, but the combination was definitely better in this case.

Wahoo’s has a variety of options, while Taco Del Mar has few but solid ones. Anyway, next up was a new dish called chicken tinga.

It sounds quite similar to an inside dish called chicken tikka, doesn’t it? Well, it was slow-cooked and simmered with chili pepper, jalapeño, garlic, red bell pepper, parsley, tomato sauce, and cilantro.

The chicken itself had a lot of juicy fat. Quite the opposite of what Chicken Tikka gives. Anyway, the seasonings or spices and their special tomato sauce took it to the next level.

Its meat was juicy and had more flavors than meets the eye. Even the smell was quite strong for its size.

Final Thoughts

Hands down, those were the best that Taco Del Mar can offer for now. There were no dessert or beverage choices. Well, that’s a bummer.

Also, it seems that Taco Del Mar isn’t doing that well in the sales part either. Stores are getting fewer and fewer people over time, so a lot of blame can be pointed toward COVID-19 as usual.

Or maybe it’s due to a lack of options. They have a good amount of them already, but dedicated dessert sections and maybe some smoothie options won’t hurt.

Also, the Baja Sauce is exclusive to serving, which is a big no-no. They should make it a separate item, so people can take a bottle with them if they like it.

I personally would’ve gone for a bottle or two. The natural blend was quite appetizing, and there are a lot of meat dishes where it’ll shine even brighter.
