The French Laundry was established in 1978 at a historical location of 6640, Washington Street, Yountville, California.

The location is a beautiful two-story rustic cottage that has an aesthetic of its own. Built from sea stones and timber, the building was built as a saloon by a Scottish Stoneman.

The 1600 square feet served as a residence and later on in the 1920s as a French steam laundry. The structure was ten renovated by town mayor Don Schmitt and Sally Schmitt, who converted it into a restaurant. The couple ran the restaurant for seventeen years before selling it to Thomas Keller in 1994.

Thomas Keller, a culinary master was on the hunt for a classic location to start up his passion project that would serve exquisite French cuisine when he came across the current The French Laundry location.

In the year 1999, Thomas published a cookbook, which is a definitive book on cuisine. In the very same year, it was dawned with three International Association of Culinary Professionals along with other accolades.
