Toppers Pizza History
Scott Gittrich in Champaign, Illinois founded Toppers Pizza. This happened around 1991 when the world was preparing to embrace the 21st century.
Scott was a well-known person in the restaurant industry before he went mainstream. In 1984, he first started working on a Domino’s delivery service.
He was a university student at UOI, and as always, youngsters like to save money for special occasions like Valentine’s Day, movies, or even dates.
That’s how Scott ended up doing a late-night shift at Domino’s, but soon his talent would attract the attention of higher-ups.
As a result, he was given a permanent seat at a branch, allowing him to do things his own way.
He served as the director of operations for about 22 franchise locations around Charlotte, North Carolina.
After 7 years of service, Scott decided to open his own restaurant and maybe even go mainstream if it worked out.
It was a big bet since he was making a good amount of money at Domino’s, but the curiosity and pressure of the challenge drove him away.
So he finally decided to open his first restaurant at Champaign called Toppers Pizza. Remember that at this point, there was already a chain called Topper’s in existence.
But he didn’t know that. Anyway, the reason behind this name was solid too. His main target audience was the students.
Toppers was one of the few restaurants that opened at 3 a.m., giving those late-night hustlers a chance to eat fresh meals.
The word “Toppers” refers to those students who will win not only in their exams but also in their lives. It’s a wholesome name, indeed.
With this statement, Scott fought the legal battle in the late 90s and was able to acquire a license for Toppers against its Canadian competitor.
Toppers Pizza Review
The initial goal was to serve pizza. So the Toppers Pizza menu was filled with it. But as soon as other fast food and Tex-Mex chains entered the market, it wasn’t enough.
So now we have chicken wings, desserts, various dipping sauces, and special beverages. As always, we had eyes for something different.
Then we saw a vegan special category. It has two pizza dishes, and one called Vegan Buffalo Chicken-Less Topper caught my attention.
The buffalo refers to the size and sauce rather than the protein. It had buffalo sauce topped with dairy-free mozzarella.
Along with green leaf plant-based chicken, drizzled with dairy-free ranch and green onions. This is dairy-free, but not gluten-free; remember that.
This was a hell of a deal, with ingredients as high as they could get. No corners were cut, except meat, obviously. That also made it a bit cheaper than protein options.
The vegan chicken was made with herbs and spices. It gave it a hot take, which was okay. It was closer to a tiny meatball than a chicken.
Anyway, we can’t complain about the taste. It was good and full of healthy vibes. Our other crew members went with Toppers Classic. This is what defines this entire chain, so how can we miss that?
It had a savory homemade pizza sauce, and the dough was made with 100% real Wisconsin mozzarella cheese.
Later ingredients go like this: pepperoni, hand-pinched Italian sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, and onions.
Meanwhile, the pizza crust was hand-tossed with various kinds of herbs that we weren’t aware of. Some of them were ginger, we think.
Anyway, this classic pizza lacked the explosive taste that Gen Z liked. Instead, it has a traditional taste that grows with each bite.
