Sarku Japan History

James Chim is the mastermind behind this idea. He had worked in a Canadian quick-serve restaurant called Manchu Wok for years

There, he learned all about how these dishes are made and why they are better than modern fast food stands.

Soon, he decided to start his restaurant with the same mindset. But in the form of his regional cuisine from Japan.

Japanese foods consist of balanced ingredients. For example, almost all dishes have herbs and veggies included.

James wanted to show the world why Japanese foods have better consistency and also why people should prefer this over junk food crap.

That fateful day came in 1987 in the form of Sarku Japan in Boston, Massachusetts. His dream became a reality, but the game had just begun.

James started serving original Japanese cuisines through the Sarku Japan menu. To his surprise, Americans loved it more than he could imagine.

By 1991, his single restaurant had grown into a full-fledged franchise with 25 stores in eight states in America.

This was again a massive success, and within just a year, this number grew twice as much. This time, his chain targeted the Midwest and Eastern Seaboard.

The end of the 20th century was marked by the grand opening of its 100th location. Throughout the next era, James decided to go international.

First, the brilliant minds under his command created their signature stand called “Teriyaki and Sushi Express”.

By the end of 2010, Sarku Japan had signed a partnership contract with Frisby Corp. to open international stores in the Republic of Colombia.

Next on their list were Asian countries like Vietnam and also the EU, if everything goes right. For the time being, there is no confirmation of this statement.

Sarku Japan Review

Asian foods always have a unique composition in their food. Also, the Sarku Japan menu and prices are adjusted accordingly for US citizens.

Our crew starves for unique tastes and flavors, and this was a perfect contender for that. The Sarku Japan menu was divided into 4 main categories: Teriyaki, Bento, Sushi, and Sides.

The first one is like a lunch or dinner, while the second one is a boxed meal. We all know what sushi is, so let’s not get too deep into the introduction.

So we started with the first section, and the Chicken Teriyaki Bowl got our immediate attention. In fact, I love anime, and these rice bowls with chicken on top are rather common in those series.

I always thought of trying it, but the perfect occasion never arrived until now. This delight had white rice as the base.

But you can replace it with noodles or fried rice instead. Extra chicken can also be added if the original portion isn’t enough.

We had the extra chicken, along with classic shrimp tempura. This tempura thingy has a red tail; this is what I have seen in many Japanese dramas.

And now I know why most Japanese love this. It was crunchy, and the shrimp was fried to perfection.

Meanwhile, the rice and chicken had the best combination we ever had. Rice is a must-have meal in Asian households, and now we know why.

It has no taste; that’s why it’s accompanied by a layer of flavor like curry and so on. Rice soaks up the fat and stock of the curry.

Which then converts it from a tasteless grain to a healthy and flavorful diet. This time our meal ended with this one dish because we had seconds soon after.

Final Thoughts

Japanese meals have an entirely different way of eating. We usually eat two or three dishes in our American-style foods in one go.

But still, sometimes that feels overwhelming, so we go for a fourth or even fifth serving. But this situation is reversed in Sarku, Japan.

Most of us got hooked on just one dish, and before we realized it, our tummies were full. The culprit behind this was white rice.

Grains fill our tummies quicker, leaving little to no space for other items like salads, desserts, or even drinks.

So modern people have straight-up ditched it and replaced it with light meals that can be eaten repeatedly.

Whatever the reason, thinking about it won’t change the fact that rice is an inseparable item for a good and healthy meal. And Sarku, Japan, nailed it.
