Shakey’s Pizza History
Shakey’s Pizza was founded by Sherwood Johnson and Ed Plummer on April 30, 1954, in Sacramento, California.
The name “Shakey’s” comes from the nickname of Johnson. He suffered from nerve damage during his service in World War 2.
That resulted in giving him lifelong motion dysfunction. In short, he shakes a lot after that tragic incident, which gave him the nickname.
After serving his country, he decided to serve its people with awesome cuisines that he found during his journey.
The initial store was called Shakey’s Pizza Parlor, and it had the vibe of a fancy bar at the time. Johnson also knew how to play Dixieland pianos.
He used his talent to serve not just pizza but a happy time in his small corner of the parlor. Eventually, he hired the Silver Dollar Jazz Band to play in his stead.
His pay was $10 per musician and all the pizza and beer they could eat. It was a true fiesta for everyone. Pizza with a beer—what more can they ask for?

The second parlor opened in 1956 in Portland, Oregon. Followed by a third one in 1959, and all of them had the same pizza, bearing a jazz vibe to it.
By the 1970s, Shakey’s Pizza had over 250 parlors in the United States. The first international store opened in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, around 1968.
The growth streak had just begun in 1975 when it dominated the Philippine market and became the largest food seller in the country.

Well, obviously, we followed them too, and we were shocked at what we saw. The hall was filled with everything that Shakey’s had to offer.
Well, who can say no to such a feast? We dove right in and picked our first pizza with veggies along with some crispy mojo potatoes and slices of onions and tomatoes from the salad section.
