Tijuana Flats History

Tijuana Flats started in Winter Park, Florida. Brian Wheeler was the mastermind behind this idea.

He borrowed $200k with the help of his father and started this massive food giant. While most college students of that era deluded themselves with things like parties and liquor.

He had the craziest idea of making one for himself. His thoughts were to make it small and live happily ever after. But millions of Americans had something else to say.

It boomed in popularity, and now it’s scattered around the US with an active location number that goes beyond 130.

The first Tijuana Flats menu included items like tacos, burritos, and art murals like Mexican fast foods.

It was initially based on another Tex-Mex food chain called Burrito Brothers from Gainesville, Florida.

It served burritos, as the name suggests, but still, it was missing something. That something was the sauce.

As you know, most burritos serve the same old food, but he wanted to make it fun. He dreamed of hotness that ranges from mild to extreme.

Around 1999, a businessman called Camp Fitch was invited to one of Tijuana Flats’ restaurants by his golf mate.

He immediately fell in love with their sauce, and he just couldn’t stop himself from dreaming about what the future would look like.

So he didn’t just see hundreds of Tijuana flats; he also saw a huge ton of money lying down for him.

So he made the big decision to become an official partner. He became the first CEO of Tijuana Flats in the same year.

Tijuana Flats Review

There is so much to talk about in their history. But we know what you need—tasty dishes and recommendations!

Well, so here it comes. Let’s start with the start menu. It had six items, and probably the best one of all was the Tijuana Trio.

As the name says, it had the best of what the Tijuana Flats menu had to offer. In this, you’ll get tortilla chips along with three dipping sauces.

Atomic bombs also looked quite tasty. This had two fried flour tortillas filled with cream and shredded cheddar jack cheese, chopped jalapeno, and side sour cream.

As for the sauce, you’ll get Smack My Ass and Call Me Sally Sweet Chilli Sauce. It’s mildly hot, so don’t be worried about burning your throat.

Next up were chicken wings. It had 3 options: 6 wings, 10 wings, and a combo pack. This combo packs 30 wings in it.

Yeah, you heard it right—30 wins! Anyway, this combo isn’t made for one person. It’s specially made for group gatherings or Netflix & Chills.

There were a few more menu options, but we just had to try the Flats’ Favorite section. It listed the best of what the Tijuana Flats menu had to offer.

Bangin Chicken Burritos, for example, had 470 calories worth of white meat chicken fried in Bangin’ Style.

Along with Bangin’ Chicken Sauce, you can have Flour Tortilla, shredded cheddar jack cheese, grilled peppers, and diced tomatoes.

Tortilla chips were also included with fresh salsa as dipping sauce, and then the main dish was dressed with ranch filling.

Final Thoughts

Did you know that his father also joined his business? Around 2000, he finally reimbursed his loan of $20000 and officially joined Tijuana Flats as CFO.

At this point, the Wheeler family had everything they needed. A source of money, millions of happy customers, and crazy ideas like the “Smack My Ass & Call Me Sally” lineup of hot sauces.

With that, their active locations grew from 4 to 65 by 2009. Now it has crossed 100 and sits somewhere between 130 and 140.

So in short, Tijuana Flats doesn’t just serve good food; their way of managing things is good too. A good working environment is the dream of everyone in town.

Please don’t be shy; go to your nearest Tijuana Flats store and show some of the same appreciation they demonstrate to everyone else.
